This Charming town is La Romana’s best kept Secret
Altos de Chavon
This charming town is La Romana’s best kept Secret; Altos de Chavon is a re-creation of a Mediterranean style village located on the top of the Chavón River in La Romana, Dominican Republic. It is the most popular attraction in the city and offers its visitors a cultural center and an archeological museum featuring many findings of the Taino’s, known as the first Indigenous inhabitants of the Island before colonization. In the center of this 16th century replica, you will also come across The Grecian style Amphitheater, which is known as one of the most iconic places on the Island, seating up to 5,000 people, and since 1982 has welcomed some of the most important names in the music business such as Frank Sinatra, Sir Elton John, Andrea Bocelli and Santana among others since its opening 36 years ago.
This project began in the year 1976 and was thought of by the Italian master designer and cinematographer Roberto Coppa, and Charles Bluhdorn. During this year, the construction of a nearby road and bridge that crossed the Chavon River brought with it as a consequence the blasting of a mountain of stone. Because of this, Charles Bludhorn chairman at the time of Paramount Pictures, had the idea of using all the left over stones to re-create a sixteenth century Mediterranean Village, getting his inspiration for the architectural features of the historic center of Santo Domingo and by the year 1980 all construction had been completed. But, as far as the tale goes, Altos de Chavon is thought to be a birthday present from a high society Millionaire to his darling daughter during the 1980’s.
Located in the heart of Altos de Chavon, is the St. Stanislaus Church, consecrated during the year 1979, Pope John Paul II sent the ashes of Poland’s Patron Saint, St. Stanislaus and also a hand carved statue from the city of Krakow, Poland which was sent in order to commemorate the church’s inauguration.
Charles Bluhdorn’s daughter, Dominique Bluhdorn, is the present head of the Altos de Chavón Cultural Center Foundation. Narrow, cobble-covered alleyways lined with lanterns and shuttered limestone walls yield several good Mediterranean-style restaurants, a number of quaint shops featuring the diverse craftwork of local artisans, and three galleries exhibiting the talents of students from the on-site design school.
